What To Do When the Heat Goes Out

Call it Murphy’s Law, or maybe just a little bad luck, but we sometimes see heat pump troubles in Jefferson City during the cooler months, when they’re needed the most to keep you comfortable. While you know the team at Stieferman Heating Company Inc will constantly be there ASAP when you need us for a heat pump repair, there are some things you can do to double check a repair is important and save yourself some money if it’s not. We’ve collected this checklist of things to try before you give us a call.

  1. It may sound silly, but make sure everything is turned “on”. We’ve been to several calls only to discover the thermostat or the heat pump itself is set to off.
    • Inspect your thermostat to ensure it’s on, set to the appropriate temperature and isn’t set to cool.
    • Then try changing the battery, if it has one.
    • If everything looks accurate, check your furnace switch (check your manual if you’re unsure where it is) and check your fuses and circuit breaker.
    • Make sure your gas is on.
  2. If the furnace still hasn’t turned on, go back to your thermostat.
    • If it’s a programmable model, make certain that it’s showing the correct time. If it thinks it’s morning when it’s in fact night, it may not turn your heat on because it doesn’t understand that you’re home.
  3. Is an impasse causing your furnace to breakdown?
    • Check your air filters to make sure they’re not blocking things up.
    • Do you have any blocked ducts, vents or cool air openings?
    • Are all supply registers open?
    • Is your exhaust flue clear?

If you’ve gone through this checklist and you’re still without heat, call Stieferman Heating Company Inc at 573-203-3908 or arrange an appointment online and we’ll get your home back to the welcoming and cozy place it should be.
